The work explores the internet’s physical and power-laden infrastructure – one that runs on the bottom of the ocean floor as a huge network of submarine tubes and cables, following currents of an embodied and obfuscated history.The installation is a collection of washed ashore parts and pieces of the internet's undersea cable infrastructure, its histories, imaginings, organic and non-organic formations.&nbsp; The artist has combed imaginary beaches like a jutter &nbsp;(/ˈjʏtər/, Dutch: someone who combs beaches for objects, preserving treasures from other worlds),&nbsp;translating this world into a constellation of ceramic, metal, PVC and found-object sculptures. Their forms imagining deep sea, digital infrastructures, and fragments of a network and intimate digital connections usually unseen.From the installation emerges an operatic monodrama, composed and built on a bed of found-sounds from internet cable landing site ‘Floreat beach’ in Boorloo/Perth. A data-mermaid sings, and reaches out through currents of questions, and reflections on power structures and imagination, whilst searching for connection. It suggests the emergence of something almost creature-like, born from the unseen world of digital connections. Through its material composition of PVC tubes, the work explores how the digital realm often imagined as ‘wireless’ and in ‘the cloud’, has a very real and physical presence, manifesting as an almost organic form in our world. The work is also loosely inspired by the Windows 95 3D pipes screensaver, which I would watch for hours on end as a child, captivated by the lifeless yet mesmerizing visual spectacle of growth and rebirth. The analogue chat is constructed from PVC tubes, metal brackets, and screws. Participants are invited to place their feet beneath the installation while watching a video of feet moving gently through a pile flower. Through the strong reliance on visual input, our bodies respond as if the digital feet are our own. A collaboration between Butoh dancers Margarita (Taiwan), Yi (China) and Droomdata during artist in Residency at de Lievelinge in June 2019.Butoh is a form of dance/theater/expression that was created in Japan after world war two. It is an art that is associated with pain, taboes and expression, however multi-interpreted across the world and through the ages. Dancer Margarita and Yi both studied the art of Butoh performance and have been traveling and performing their craft. Butoh is a performance that is felt by the viewer, where expression through the body takes hold.We questioned how place and surrounding holds memory for us, and therefore, parts of who we are. We questioned how we relate, take responsibility for, and memorize places that once were part of our daily routine, and may now have transformed into distant places. How do we connect to place, and how does place connect to us? The musical and DroomData elements of the live performance were build up by recorded and edited found sounds from in and around the Lievelinge. Drawn equally to concepts and materials, their practice follows a kind of magpie logic, forever in awe of the shiny wonder world of material and conceptual exploration. Saar is interested in hidden structures and networks that shape our realities, currently researching the very physical realities of our digital lives. Originally from the Netherlands, Saar graduated from the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht and has exhibited at institutions such as the Centraal Museum Utrecht and W139 in Amsterdam and many DIY and non-institutions both in the Netherlands and ‘Australia’. In 2012, they moved to Naarm/Melbourne, and later lived and worked in Mparntwe/Alice Springs, where they supported artists and their making at Bindi&nbsp; and as Director of Watch This Space. Saar has released experimental albums independently and in collaboration, and has worked with dancers, musicians, and other comrades across disciplines. They see art as a vehicle of change, connection and beauty as a way to imagine and experience the radical potential of our world. They are currently based on Whadjuk Noongar Boodja, working from their studio at Fremantle Arts Centre.
